Then, later, earning our stripes upstairs; hanging out at the arcade in the pool hall where we watched the old guys on the tables work their game, practise for league night or other more $$alient endeavours. Johnny would give us free french fries, tips on how hustle eight ball and teach us seemingly impossible snooker shots when it was slow.

We taught him the best possible route to eat all the blinky ghosts in under thirty seconds.

Who knew four bucks in quaters between two kids playing Donkey Kong, Asteroids and the like would come back in spades over thirty years later?

Seems you did. So true.

"Kids don't go to the drugstore anymore to find inspiration..." - so where do they go today then, Youtube?

This post brought back a lot of memories...thanks Jim.wcdixonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06511429457006302795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34798599.post-68018656226217340312010-04-02T14:29:08.670-04:002010-04-02T14:29:08.670-04:00That was a great remembrance, Jim. ROCK, FAMOUS MONSTERS, CREEPY, EERIE, and VAMPIRELLA into the mix as well as some assorted Kung Fu comics and you have a capsule review of my drug store experiences.

And then when used bookstores (Who would think of a thing?) cropped up I was able to discover material that was already 20 years gone by the time I was ready for it. Spillane, Campbell, Pohl, Howard, and an assortment of the best of the 'trash' fiction.

Every day when I'm working on a project I reach back to that young kid who discovered that odd comic, magazine or paperback and that tingle he used to get when he saw the 'right' purchase. I use that feeling to gauge what I'm doing and ask,"Would that kid get the 'tingle over this?' It's how I know I'm on the right track, and it's served me pretty damn well.

Lessons learned.Cunninghamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07137025404327426886noreply@blogger.com
